Employees everywhere are quiet quitting. Opting out of the enthusiasm that organizations need to thrive and grow.

The cause is primarily a combination of accumulated stress and an employee perception that they are just names and numbers.

The solution is a combination of demonstrating that you are interested in your employee’s wellbeing, that you understand there is stress and disruption, and making it clear that performance rooted in teamwork is a priority in your organization.

Making it clear that you care is delivered through management by example and policy, which is the expression of your corporate culture. Making corporate culture stick requires engagement, which is a result of a healthy and informed communication culture.

Creating and maintaining an informed communication culture is just one of the many reasons our workshop will be so valuable to your organization, it’s a game changer.

The purpose of this post is to promote Dr. Alan Watkins. We do not have any affiliation with him or his organization. However we are focused on a shared mission. The link below is to a TEDx video where Dr Watkins presents his insights into what he refers to as “E”motion. The video is approximately 20 minutes and it includes subtitles.

The case is presented that emotion is simply energy in motion, hence “E”motion. And while emotion is straightforward in nature, it often manifests in complex behaviour patterns. The good news is that understanding the basic principles of behaviour and it’s motivators goes a long way towards de-mystifying “E”motion and learning to manage it.

There are so many great takeaways. One that I especially liked was Stop, Listen, Think, then Respond. It was nice to hear that said by two such renowned thinkers, I’ve been promoting that very communication cycle for years in my writing and workshops.

Another wonderful takeaway was that conflict resolution is not about ending conflict, it’s about transforming the approach into one of seeking constructive rather than destructive interactions. And this is made possible by someone being able and willing to risk offering something better for the other side to respond to.

This is really wonderful stuff, kudos to both Simon Sinek and William Ury.

Hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

Here’s the link to Simon’s LinkedIn post, then click to his PodCast channel and scroll down to Jan.4, 2022 to play the “Resolving Conflict with William Ury” episode: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6884040729119756288/

Our key performance indicators (KPI’s) are not bad, they’re just incomplete. The behaviour you reward in pursuit of the goal is critical when it comes to the long term. Be aware of what you may be overlooking when you measure performance. Your incentive structure it is a key contributor to the culture you are creating. Reliable performance and growth over time is more valuable than the gains from short term goals achieved at all costs.

I’ve always been impressed with Simon Sinek. In this very short video he has managed to synthesize why culture is absolutely key to success. As a heads up, I’ve edited a few words in this video clip. I believe this is a valuable message and it needs to be heard by everyone everywhere.

Here is a wonderfully insightful and entertaining little video of a talk given at a Product Management conference. The speaker uses humor and relatable real world experiences to present a hugely informative perspective on how and why things go wrong in business. Not surprisingly it has a lot to do with how the human brain works.

Dealing with these natural tendencies comes down to culture, which of course includes both leadership and engagement. One of the great insights is that to think outside the box requires overcoming both the biology and the conditioning of our brains.

The speaker is Dave Wascha, at the time Chief Product Officer at Moo.com and he is speaking at the Mind The Product Conference in 2014, The talk is entitled Inside the Mind of the Product Manager.

Does talking about the upside of ego sound odd? Isn’t ego a bad thing that motivates bad behaviour? The answer is, not entirely. Of course ego does have a downside, but it has a clear upside also. For example, ego is a powerful motivator. As a result, ego is a key characteristic of high performers in every field you can think of. So being critical of ego is unfair, and can even be self limiting. On the other hand, embracing ego to much can be self limiting also. The key is to recognize the subtle nuances of ego and learn to manage them.

Like so many other things, there is more to ego than meets the eye. High performers understand this, and the best of them have learned to manage their egos. Just as they manage their nervous system, time, dedication, discipline and many other things. High performance is not an accident. Rather, it is the result of persistent purposeful effort. That effort starts with learning to manage human nature, which ego is a part of. And that requires focused learning, just like any other field of study.

Here’s the good news. It’s relatively easy to learn the basics of human nature. We already know much of it. We just don’t view it through a focused and informed lens in our busy day to day lives. The better news is that with this knowledge you can create an environment around you that encourages high performance. In so doing you invest in success. Whether you apply that to yourself, your tribe, your organization, or all of the above, this is an investment that can’t help but pay off.

Below is a link to an article by Jeff Steen of INC magazine, spotlighting Ryan Holiday. In outlining 5 key practices of positive leaders he provides a deeper view of ego. I came across the article on LinkedIn. It was posted by Carol Ring, a thought leader in the workplace culture space. You can find out more about her at carolring.ca, and I encourage you do so.

This is a great little video. In just under 8 minutes it encapsulates the primary mystery of our human psyche. It will take you a long way towards understanding why some people respond to you the way they do.

With understanding comes power.

Being able to recognize how and why our human natures impact our performance and our relationships is invaluable. The following video talks about the why. For our part, we talk about the how. How do you recognize instinctive responses and how do you manage them in order to achieve better results. Which ultimately leads to how do you build a results oriented communication culture.
