Your message matters because how people react to your message matters. And how people react to your message is what determines your impact.
Both words and context are important parts of your message, they lead to the listener’s perception, ultimately influencing their frame of mind as they respond to your message.
That’s why people’s responses are so unexpected sometimes.
So when the response is unexpected it’s a sure sign that what you intended to express was not what was received. Something has most likely been triggered. And clarification is needed. Seek to clarify what they heard, then seek to clarify what you meant for them to hear.
Something as subtle as how a few words are used can have a huge impact on what gets triggered. And what gets triggered has a huge impact on what comes next.
You can tell when someone is triggered when you get an unexpected response, and you can manage their unexpected response with what you choose to do next.
